The M.A. program in philosophy at Franciscan University
sponsors the Conference on Christian Philosophy.
Each conference has a special theme; past
themes include the Franciscan tradition in philosophy,
Christian personalism, and the philosophical
legacy of John Henry Newman. This year the conference
turns in a new direction and addresses the
philosophical foundations of bioethics.
The M.A. program in philosophy has from the beginning
made a special commitment to ethics and to
the philosophy of the human person; these are areas
in which we profess to have special strength and in
which the philosophers of the program have distinguished
themselves. It is a natural development of
what we already are to give attention to issues of
bioethics, especially to the philosophical foundations
of bioethics.
At the same time, the philosophers organizing this
conference wish to extend a particular invitation to
physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals
who are interested in bioethics. Our keynote speaker
is a bioethicist who is at the same time a practicing
physician. Through him and through the presence
of medical professionals in the audience and in the
open discussions we hope in this conference to bring
together theory and practice.
