Five Reasons Why You Should Study Philosophy!

1.       As Socrates observed, “the unexamined life is not worth living.”  Philosophy examines every aspect of life and the world with the desire to discover truth.  You will find it deeply rewarding and exhilarating to discover truth, value, goodness, and beauty and their application to your own life.

2.       If your vocation involves teaching, writing, analyzing, or explaining, your work will be greatly enhanced by philosophical training.  Philosophy provides a foundation for thinking critically and clearly, as well as an ethical framework for addressing moral issues in professional work.

3.       Your faith will mature as you penetrate the philosophical foundations of what you believe.  You will also be able to articulate and explain your faith more clearly.

4.       If you are considering a religious or priestly vocation, then philosophical training is essential.  It is a prerequisite for Major Seminary, to say nothing of being a practical necessity for your priestly or religious vocation.  You will have to be articulate and persuasive not only for believers, but for all people.

Finally, philosophy is a solid basis for a comprehensive liberal arts education.  Philosophy can be fruitfully applied to theology, literature, journalism, psychology, and political science
