An Invitation

In the pages that follow, you will find descriptions of academic programs, campus organizations, and various activities that go together to form a university experience. However, there is something additional that cannot be conveyed in pictures and print. It is what happens when a particular group of people join together to achieve a common goal. It is something experienced in a particular setting. It is what Pope John Paul II describes in his apostolic constitution on Catholic universities when he writes, "The mission that the Church, with great hope, entrusts to Catholic universities holds a cultural and religious meaning of vital importance because it concerns the very future of humanity." I invite you to join us in a unique experience —the Franciscan University of Steubenville experience.

Rev. Michael Scanlan, TOR
PRESIDENT
FRANCISCAN UNIVERSITY OF STEUBENVILLE

Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, was formally installed and invested as President of the University on October 5, 1974

A graduate of Harvard Law School, member of the New York Bar, and staff judge advocate of the US Air Force, Father Scanlan was also Academic Dean of the University from 1964 to 1969, and served as Rector-President of St. Francis Seminary, Loretto, Pennsylvania, from 1969 to 1974.

In 1997, Father Scanlan received the highest honor of the Third Order Regular Franciscans, the Sacrae Theologiae Magister. This academic degree, which is beyond the doctorate, recognized Father Scanlan's mastery in the field of theology.

The author of several books, including What Does God Want: A Practical Guide to Making Decisions, Father Scanlan has spoken at Christian conferences around the world.

A Brief Overview of Franciscan University of Steubenville

In the spirit of authentic, Catholic higher education, Franciscan University of Steubenville emphasizes the formation of strong, moral character and critical thinking. Our 1998-99 enrollment of over 2,000 includes students from all 50 states and over 40 foreign countries.

Franciscan University of Steubenville has been recognized as one of the best Catholic universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report, the Templeton Foundation, Barron's magazine, National Review, and the National Catholic Register.

Our Honors Program provides an exciting intellectual challenge that can be integrated into any course of study. When this program is combined with the Humanities and Catholic Culture major, a solid grounding is gained in theology, philosophy, and the major contributions of Catholicism to Western culture.

Our Business courses continue to be among the most popular in the curriculum; the Elementary Education Program serves over 170 majors; our Psychology and Mental Health and Human Services Programs have sent more than 335 graduates to 82 graduate schools throughout the country, all of whom have successfully completed their advanced degrees; our Nursing graduates have achieved a high success rate in passing their state board exams; and our Math, Science, and Pre-Med Programs produce exemplary graduates.

Franciscan University has earned an international reputation for its Theology Program. Grounded in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, the program attracts more undergraduate Theology majors than any other Catholic university or college in the country.

The fall of 1991 marked the inauguration of our campus in Gaming, Austria. Students study and live in a restored medieval monastery, nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Austrian Alps. A special four-day class schedule offers them the opportunity to encounter the historical venues of Prague, Rome, Berlin, Paris, Vienna, and St. Petersburg and to meet fellow students from all over Europe.

Franciscan University of Steubenville's unique household system also extends to our Austrian Campus. Households are groups of five to twenty-five students who share, support, and pray with one another. They are the nucleus of Catholic, Christian living and encourage the concrete expression of faith. Households, fraternities, and sororities are active in the local community, participating in a wide variety of service projects.

With great celebration the Finnegan Fieldhouse opened its doors for athletic use in October 1992. Two full-sized basketball courts, two racquetball courts, a weight room, an exercise room, an aerobics room, and fully equipped locker rooms facilitate physical development, an important complement to academic and spiritual pursuits. The Fieldhouse, with a seating capacity of over 2,000, also offers an indoor site to hold special events such as graduation and liturgical ceremonies.

In the fall of 1997, Kolbe and Clare Halls were dedicated in memory of the two Franciscan saints for which they are named: St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Clare of Assisi. In the fall of 2000,
the Saints Cosmas and Damian Science Hall will be completed.  The four story, 4000 square-foot building will give students in the sciences the first-class educational facilities they need to thrive in highly sophisticated fields after graduation.

Franciscan University is proud of its alumni, students, and faculty who play key roles in both public and religious sectors of society. They are examples of Christian character, charity, and competence in business, psychology, education, research, ecclesial service, athletics, and medicine. Regional reunions and our University magazine keep the University and its staff in close contact with Franciscan University graduates.

We commend you for becoming part of the Franciscan tradition of quality higher education. We look forward to preparing students like you for the challenges of the twenty-first century—and beyond.
