Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish Majors are offered in French and Spanish for three categories of students: 1) those who wish to acquire a liberal education centered on the intensive study of foreign language, literature, and culture; 2) those planning to do post-graduate work in these fields; and 3) those intending to become foreign language teachers, professional translators, interpreters, foreign correspondents, etc. FRESHMAN YEAR

Spanish Major Requirements Spn 201, 202, 434, and 24 credits of upper-level Spanish courses. Spanish Minor Spn 201-202 and 12 credit hours in 300-400 level Spanish courses. Spanish COURSES SPN 101-102 ELEMENTARY SPANISH I & II study the first principles of grammar, drills on pronunciation and vocabulary, oral and written exercises, and drills in the language laboratory. (Communications Core) 3 credit hours per semester SPN 201-202 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I & II review and continue the study of grammar, conversation, prose composition, and selected reading. Language lab work is also included. (Communications Core) 3 credit hours per semester SPN 303-304 ADVANCED COMPOSITION AND CONVERSATION I & II concentrate on the fine points of grammar, further practice in idioms, conversation, and prose composition. Conducted in Spanish. Prerequisites: Spn 201-202 3 credit hours per semester SPN 305 WRITTEN SPANISH EXPRESSION broadens the student's understanding of Spanish through the study of grammar and style. The active use of Spanish to achieve effective writing skills is stressed. Conducted in Spanish. 3 credit hours SPN 306 ORAL SPANISH EXPRESSION is a study of phonetics and the discrimination of oral styles including inflection. Systematic and intensive practice in oral language skills is provided along with extemporaneous conversation to encourage the student to "think" in Spanish. elements, such 3 credit hours SPN 326 SPANISH-AMERICAN CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION focuses on the geography, history, art and sciences, customs, and traditions of Hispanic countries in the New World. Lectures, readings, discussions, and reports are included. 3 credit hours SPN 353 CONTEMPORARY SPANISH LITERATURE is a survey of the writers of the post-Civil War period in Spain via analysis of selected readings. (Humanities Core) Prerequisites: Spn 201-202 or permission of the instructor 3 credit hours SPN 361 MASTERPIECES OF SPANISH-AMERICAN LITERATURE critically examines the most significant works in all genres. Attention will focus on those authors most representative of the major trends in Spanish-American literature, with special emphasis on the emergence and development of the themes of that literature. Written and/or oral reports. (Humanities Core) Prerequisites: Spn 201-202 or permission of the instructor 3 credit hours SPN 362 THE SPANISH-AMERICAN NOVEL is a study of the development of the novel in Spanish-America during the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will read and evaluate such authors as Marmol, Sarmiento, Blest Gana, Guiraldes, and Gallegos. Lectures, discussions, oral, and/or written reports. 3 credit hours SPN 370 MEDIEVAL LITERATURE examines works from 1110 to early 1600 with special study of El Cid, Libro de Buen Amor, La Celestina, and the Comedia Himenea. In addition to the narrative, lyric, and epic poetry of this periodwhich would include such works as Poema de Fernan Gonzalez, Libro de Alexandre, and La Razon de Amorthe didactic and transitional periods, popular poetry, and the Novela de Caballerias will be discussed. A consideration of the historical background will serve to integrate the events and artistic productions of this period. Written and/or oral reports. 3 credit hours SPN 406 THE GOLDEN AGE uses lectures and selected readings from the Spanish literature of the 16th and 17th centuries to highlight a study of authors and styles from Garcilaso to Calderon. Conducted in Spanish. 3 credit hours SPN 425 CERVANTES studies the principal works of Cervantes with emphasis given to El Quijote, the Novelas Ejemplares, and La Numancia. Lectures, class discussions, research, written and/or oral reports. 3 credit hours SPN 430 ROMANTICISM is a detailed study of the Romantic movement as seen in the major works of Espronceda, Pereda, Valera, Zorrilla, Palacio Valdes, Becquer, and Galdos. Extensive reading and analysis of the prose, drama, and poetry of these prominent writers promotes a double objective of gaining an understanding of the Spanish version of the worldwide movement as well as an appreciation of the unique styles of the Spanish romanticists. 3 credit hours SPN 433 MODERNISM considers the Spanish literary manifestations of the "epoch" of Modernism, with emphasis on the reading and interpretation of the representative works in all genres. As such, it will include the study of the writers of the "generation of `98" as well as those of succeeding "generations" up to and including Ortega y Gassett. 3 credit hours SPN 434 THESIS requires that a dissertation be written under the guidance of an instructor. The subject is chosen in consultation with the head of the department and may deal with an aspect of the language, literature, or civilization of Spain or Spanish-America. 1 credit hour SPN 435 COORDINATING SEMINAR emphasizes selected readings, research, reports, and discussions of specific authors, genres, or trends in Spanish or Spanish-American literature. A recommended course for students planning to enter graduate school. 1 credit hour Other Modern Languages ML 201-202 INTERMEDIATE MODERN LANGUAGES allows students with proficiency in a modern foreign language to receive credit by scoring on a special examination at a level consistent with Modern Language Department standards.
