A Music minor can be earned by a student working on an academic major at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Students may satisfy the applied music requirement in another instrument besides voice and classical guitar under the following conditions: 1) students must have permission of the Department Chairperson, and 2) students must demonstrate intermediate level proficiency in their chosen instrument. Students are responsible for their own lessons with private tutors.

COURSES

MUS 101-102

THEORY AND HARMONY I & II study the fundamental elements of music—melodic, rhythmic, harmonic—through hearing, playing, and writing of material. A harmonic analysis related to musical history is presented. Sight-singing, aural training in scales, intervals, and rhythmic patterns are developed. (Communications Core )

MUS 111

GUITAR CLASS I stresses basic techniques of playing the guitar and the functional application of these techniques to enable the student to use the guitar as an accompaniment instrument.

MUS 112

GUITAR CLASS II is a continuation of Guitar Class I with further development of accompaniment techniques, along with providing the necessary skills to use the guitar as a tool for the teaching of music.

MUS 113

VOICE CLASS I is designed to teach the foundations of good vocal technique. Included will be the beginning of practical training in vocal production, breath control, diction, and music interpretation.

MUS 114

VOICE CLASS II is a continuation of Voice Class I, with development of techniques introduced in the previous semester.

MUS 182

CHORUS involves the study and performance of choral literature. Chorus has two rehearsal sessions per week and performs for University functions.

Admission by audition and 1 credit hour, repeatable to permission of the director a maximum of 6 credit hours

MUS 201-202

THEORY AND COMPOSITION I & II provide training in more advanced melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic aspects of music through listening, playing, and original composition in different historical styles. Sight-singing in treble, bass, tenor, and alto clefs. (Communications Core)

Prerequisites: Mus 101-102 or permission of the instructor 3 credit hours per semester

MUS 204

MUSIC APPRECIATION employs a listening approach for understanding musical styles, forms, and compositions as related to musical history. (Humanities Core)

MUS 211

GUITAR CLASS III is an introductory course in classical guitar to train students to progress beyond simple folk strumming and to begin mastery of the guitar as a solo instrument. (Classical guitar required.)

Prerequisites: Mus 111-112 or permission of the instructor 1 credit hour

MUS 212

GUITAR CLASS IV is a continuation of Guitar Class III, emphasizing improved coordination of the fingers through appropriate exercises, improved sight reading skills, and an introduction to the different styles of music in different periods:
Music Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary. (Classical guitar required.)

Prerequisites: Mus 111-112 or permission of the instructor 1 credit hour

MUS 213

VOICE CLASS III concentrates on the application of vocal techniques, using a wide variety of musical styles.

Prerequisites: Mus 113-114 or permission of the instructor 1 credit hour

MUS 214

VOICE CLASS IV continues the skills developed in Voice Class III, with concentration on the art of singing, using a variety of musical styles and repertoire.

MUS 301

SURVEY OF MUSIC HISTORY I is a detailed survey of Western music from the early Christian chants to 1750. A detailed analysis is also made of the characteristics, styles, forms, and functions of music in society. (Humanities Core )

SURVEY OF MUSIC HISTORY II is a detailed survey of Western music from 1750 to the present. A detailed analysis is also made of the composition techniques, styles, forms, and functions in society. (Humanities Core)
