Humanities and Catholic Culture Mr. Dominic Aquila, chairman The Humanities and Catholic Culture Program will give you a solid and broad liberal arts experience built around traditional disciplines in the humanities, and will convey the contributions of Catholicism in the building of Western culture during the major periods of its history. Youll gain solid training in philosophy and theology; work to develop proficiency in writing; study and discuss many of the great books and great thinkers; and examine the impact of religion on culture and Catholicisms relationship with different cultural currents and developments. Humanities and Catholic Culture Major Requirements HCC 201, 401, 404, and 435; Eng 103, 104, 324, 331, and 447; Phl 113, 211, 212, 308, and 312; The 101, 102, 302, 320, and 402; Hst 351, 323, 324; 6 credits of intermediate-level foreign language. COURSES HCC 201 RELIGION AND CULTURE examines the effect that religion, generally, has on the shaping of the different aspects of a civilization and a culture. Different religious traditions will be used as examples. Particular attention will be given to the impact of Christianity. Required of all Humanities and Catholic Culture majors. (Humanities Core) 3 credit hours HCC 401 CATHOLICISM AND THE MODERN WORLD examines how Catholicism and
leading Catholic thinkers have addressed the philosophical, intellectual, social, and
political trends, many of which have been markedly secular since the Enlightenment.
Particular focus is given to the Catholic response to such leading modern thinkers as
Descartes, Kant, and Marx and to such modern political-social ideologies as Marxism,
fascism, and socialism. The area of possible compatibility between 3 credit hours HCC 404 CATHOLICS, CATHOLICISM, AND AMERICAN CULTURE studies the Catholic historical experience in America, including both the highlights of the history of Catholic ethnic groups in the American population and of the Church in the US. It considers the leading contributions of Catholics and Catholicism to American culture and life and examines the crucial question of whether Catholicism is compatible with the founding principles of the American nation. Required of all Humanities and Catholic Culture majors. (Social Science Core) 3 credit hours HCC 435 COORDINATING SEMINAR involves readings, discussion, and writing on a selected theme or themes in Catholic culture. The approach will be interdisciplinary, with an attempt to bring the various disciplines studied in the major to bear on the focused themes. Each student will be expected to do a written or other major project studying the impact of Catholicism on culture as seen through one of the disciplines.
